Distributing before you tamp breaks up the clumps a grinder leaves behind, so the water meets one even bed instead of a dozen soft spots.
Check your size before ordering. Portafilter diameter is stamped on most baskets, and a bottomless portafilter must match both the diameter and the lug pattern of your group head.
