Hand-stirring with needles works but is slow and easy to do unevenly. The rotary action spins the needles through the dose at a constant depth, so the bed gets the same treatment across the whole basket.

WDT — Weiss Distribution Technique — is stirring the dose with fine needles before tamping. It is the cheapest fix for channelling there is.
Check your size before ordering. Portafilter diameter is stamped on most baskets, and a bottomless portafilter must match both the diameter and the lug pattern of your group head.
